3. Forcing The Doctor To Stay On Trenzalore - <i>The Time Of The Doctor</i>
Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor was plagued by a mysterious 'crack in the wall' throughout his time as The Doctor. We had thought by the end of his first series, we'd seen the last of it, but then it reappeared in his swansong episode, The Time of the Doctor.
It was revealed to be being used by the Time Lords to locate The Doctor, and force him to speak his name- which would allow them to travel through the crack, escaping from their bubble universe. The trouble was, that every enemy The Doctor had ever faced was surrounding Trenzalore. If the Time Lords managed to re-enter the universe, then the Time War would simply begin again. However, if The Doctor left the planet, then his enemies would burn it all to the ground. The Doctor was in a stalemate, and completely stuck on the planet, due to the actions of the Time Lords.
He remained on Trenzalore for 900 years, defending the town of Christmas against his enemies. After an emotional talking to from Clara, the Time Lords eventually granted The Doctor with new regenerations, showing at least a little remorse in a landscape of evil.
