Drew Barrymore: 5 Awesome Performance And 5 That Sucked

1. Lena - Wishful Thinking (1997)

A year before Drew Barrymore starred in arguably the best film of her career, Ever After, she appeared in what is arguably the worst film of her career, Wishful Thinking. While she's hardly unfamiliar with run-of-the-mill rom-coms, Wishful Thinking has the unenviable privilege of boasting a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Everything about Wishful Thinking screams mediocrity at best, downright nonsense at worst. From the premise, in which Barrymore's Lena seizes her opportunity to ingratiate herself with projectionist Max (James LeGros) after his relationship with his girlfriend Jenny (Jennifer Beals) turns sour, to the utterly routine way in which writer-director Adam Park lays out the predictable story beats, the only real wishful thinking here is that the film might surprise you with something unexpected or original. With characters this pedestrian and shallow and a script featuring some truly risible dialogue, it's no wonder that Barrymore fails to inhabit her character with any identifiable traits or warmth. It's hardly surprising that Miramax put Wishful Thinking on the shelf for so long, eventually bypassing a theatrical run and quietly releasing it on home video. What other awesome and awful performances from Drew Barrymore can you think of? Why not tell us about them in the comments?
