Dunst as Debbie Harry

Despite previous rumours suggesting otherwise, Deborah Harry does like the idea of Kirsten Dunst playing her. I think you might be in the minority of one Debbie.

As far as cool and sexy rock 'n' roll ladies go they don't come cooler or sexier than Debbie Harry in her prime. The singer/actress came relatively late to fame but quickly became the ultimate front woman and pulled new wave band Blondie up into the stratosphere.

The band cranked out some impressive pop tunes with "Atomic" and "Hangin' on the Telephone" (one of the greatest covers of all time?), a disco classic with "Heart of Glass" (I'm told this track is used to excellent effect in We Own The Night), and a rap/funk oddity in "Rapture". A movie about Harry and the group could make for an interesting look at the New York CBGB scene in the 80s. Director Michel Gondry is on the case and he's cast Kirsten Dunst to play Harry in the biopic. When news of Dunst's casting broke there was naturally an Internet backlash and the actress responded with this statement:-
"Debbie chose me for this role so anyone who disputes this can take it up with her."

Harry confirmed to Spinner that she's behind Dunst 110%, that means she could backtrack 10% and still be totally in support of her!
"She's a really sweet person," Harry says. "I've met with her a couple of times and hung out with her socially. She's just a sweetie." Does that mean she could handle the role though? "I think so. She's probably capable of a lot of things she hasn't been asked to do yet, and doing something that's sort of left of center would be great for her."
I know Dunst is an easy target but damn I don't like this casting choice. Sure, she is a passable visual match but Harry radiates detached cool and hipness. Dunst does not. At all. They don't look much like Debs (perhaps Gondry should see Control, leading man Sam Riley looks nothing like Ian Curtis and it's not a problem) but I reckon Maggie Gyllenhaal or Scarlett Johansson would be better choices. They both have a spark, that "it" factor that Dunst sorely lacks. Take a look at the video below and tell me I'm not crazy for thinking Dunst, even with Gondry directing her, has zero chance of being as sexy, cool or charismatic as this...

Will Reynolds hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
