Dustin Hoffman: 5 Awesome Performances & 5 That Sucked
2. Mumbles - Dick Tracy (1990)
It may rank as one of the weirdest cameos ever, but Mumbles is still one of the most annoying performances Hoffman has ever given. Mumbles is an informant Dick Tracy comes up against a few times and, like the name suggests, he mumbles incoherently through all of his lines. Hoffman did the role as a favour for his old mate Warren Beatty, but while they might have been had fun working together the same joy isnt shared by the audience, who have to endure Hoffman mugging furiously for the camera. His incessant jabbering is damn near unbearable, but Beatty seems to think hes mining comedy gold so the Mumbles scenes run longer than they ever should have. It was nice to see Hoffman cut loose and do a silly little cameo for his friend; too bad it had to be in such an annoying part.
