Each Sacha Baron Cohen Character Ranked Worst To Best
2. Ali G
Ali G was Cohen's first character to make it big, and is mainly responsible for the success of the actor. Starting as a generic youth without a real name, Cohen took the concept and rolled with it, creating the fictional persona who would tease politicians and the members of the upper class to an uproarious degree.
The biggest accomplishment of Ali G is how he is used to comment on politics. In stark contrast to General Aladeen, Ali is a far more subtle method of poking fun at politicians. Through making it clear before the interviews that the character is uneducated, Cohen lures his interviewees into genuinely believing that the lower classes are this way, and accidentally exposing their prejudice throughout the interview.
This is the ultimate success of the character. He always makes fun of those he interviews, whilst not letting them in on the joke and exposing the whole operation. They genuinely believe they are safe, but we as the audience know that they are not.
Ali G in Da House was Cohen's first character film, and still stands to this day as an incredibly fun movie, which launched the career of notable actors such as Martin Freeman. The political commentary and deliberate stark contrast of the character to his setting is a fantastic set up for comedy, and it never fails to get laughs.
