Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References
Bill Bailey provides a sight gag in the film as both desk sergeants at Sandford Police station, who can only be told apart by their hairstyle and their disposition to life in general. The characters can also be told apart by a sly literary reference before we even know theyre different people, one of them is reading the Iain Banks novel Complicity whereas the other is reading two books by Iain M. Banks (The State Of The Art and The Hydrogen Sonata). Banks is the same author, but he used to keep the middle initial in his name for his science fiction output, and dropped it for his more strait-laced books. The presence of both books in the film is symbolic of the fact that the sergeants are different, but the same. In another literary Easter egg, Complicity concerns itself with a spate of cruel yet convenient killings, echoing perfectly the NWAs homicidal quest to win and retain the Village of the Year crown for Sandford.
