El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie Review - 7 Ups & 2 Downs
4. The Restrained Approach To Fan Service
One of the biggest mistakes made by movie revivals of TV shows is a misguided excess of fan service.
The desire to please fans is self-evident, but there's something to be said for restraint and not giving audiences too much of what they think they want to the point where it's patronising.
And while El Camino adds plenty of context to the events of the series and includes a number of fun cameos - but more on that in a moment - the film never tries too hard to call back to its prior legacy.
Gilligan doesn't needlessly tie off hanging threads in Breaking Bad's narrative nor bring too many original cast members back for too long, ensuring the film feels robust as a singular piece of work.
It's a precarious balance to strike, and here it's struck wonderfully.
