Encanto Review: 7 Ups & 3 Downs

1. The Massively Rushed Ending

Though Encanto maintains a calm, confident canter for the most part, it needlessly rushes through the emotional climax, such that audiences might feel a little short-changed by it.

Without going into detail, the movie's ending is hinged on several impactful revelations and one major reconcilliation, and yet the later is speeded through with such dispassionate efficiency that it doesn't land nearly as affectingly as it could have.

It feels like we needed a little more to really cement what was happening to the characters, and so as presented here it just feels a bit too easy and tidy for a situation filled with complicated emotions and perspectives.

Given that much of the ending is hinged around one of the movie's more under-served characters overall - Mirabel's estranged uncle Bruno (John Leguizamo) - it's a shame that the enormity of his situation wasn't milked for a few more scenes as it easily could have been.

These gripes aside, though, there's a lot to love about Encanto. Here's what it gets right...
