As intriguing as the weirdness of a film centered on the Eurovision Song Contest might be on paper, the core of this movie is basically every formulaic underdog music movie you've ever seen.

Less an attempt to poke fun at the contest's absurdity and more a straightforward rise-to-fame story for Lars and his music partner Sigrit Ericksdottir (McAdams), you know exactly where this thing is going from first minute to last.

And while it's not the worst crime in the world for a comedy movie to play to the basic plot beats, given that the humour itself is so thoroughly hit-and-miss, it compounds just how utterly unimaginative the film is from the ground-up.

There are no attempts to subvert expectations, and clearly no desire to do anything other than serve up the most basic, easily digestible narrative.
