Every 2016 Disney Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
8. Pete’s Dragon
Rotten Tomatoes: 86%
The latest movie in a long line of classic Disney remakes, Pete’s Dragon hit cinemas in late summer and earned itself a good few glowing reviews despite underperforming at the box office. Well, perhaps ‘classic’ is a bit of an exaggeration. The original 1977 musical version of Pete’s Dragon, in which its young protagonist was the victim of child slavery and abuse, was never that beloved a Disney film. But the new, CGI-upped version swaps young Pete’s backstory for a more palatably tragic, ‘orphaned after his parents died in a car crash’ plotline that seemed to sit better with critics and audiences.
The movie owes its success largely to the wonder conjured by cinematographer Bojan Bazelli and Weta, the Peter Jackson owned visual effects company behind the creation of Elliot the Dragon, alongside some strong performances from its cast. Overall, it’s an enchanting enough movie but by no means Disney’s best last year.
