After making a staggering $1.153 billion at the global box office, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War was the undisputed mega-hit of the year, ranking not only as the highest-grossing film of 2016 but also the twelfth highest grossing film of all time. It wasn’t just a huge money maker either: by and large critics loved it with some even hailing it as one of the best superhero movies ever made.

Typical superhero movie staples like blistering action sequences and a grand battle finale are offset by Civil War’s surprisingly emotional core and some genuinely funny moments and it even manages to juggle its much-loved regular characters while introducing two new Avengers, Black Panther and Spider-Man. Further proof that the Disney Marvel partnership is a lucrative venture indeed, and one whose success will no doubt be repeated next year with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnorak.
