Every 2016 Disney Movie Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Queen Of Katwe
Rotten Tomatoes: 92%
Adapted from a biographical book by sports journalist Tim Crothers, Queen of Katwe tells the uplifting real-life story of Phiona Mutesi – a young girl living in poverty in a Ugandan slum who after being schooled in the art of chess by a missionary worker discovered a talent for the sport, rose to the top of her game and even competed at the sport’s most prestigious team tournament, the World Chess Olympiad. Newcomer Madina Nalwanga shines in her acting debut as the world-class chess prodigy and has already earned herself a couple of Outstanding Actress nominations from the likes of the Black Reel Awards, while co-stars David Oyelowo and Lupita Nyong'o excel as Phiona’s inspiring mentor Robert Katende and her worried mother Nakku Harriet respectively.
It’s a warm and winning film that alongside Moana is hopefully proof that 2016 is the year Disney started taking diversity a little more seriously.
