2. Tallulah
Orange is the New Black writer Sian Heder makes a memorable directorial debut thanks largely to Ellen Page's excellent central performance as a drifter who ends up kidnapping a young child from an inept mother.
A premise like this is just primed for tonal dissonance, yet Heder manages to keep a firm balance between its lighter and darker elements, cementing the inherent horror of the scenario but also mining deep into Tallulah's humanity and unique life experience.
Don't expect to get served up many surprises, but Page substantially elevates the rock solid drama with her marvelous work that deserves to be seen by more.
