Devon Terrell gives a marvelous performance as a college-age Barack Obama in this insightful drama that functions as both a potent biopic and engrossing examination of 1980s race relations in its own right.

In addition, Barry benefits from sharp direction and cinematography, as well as a strong supporting turn from Anya Taylor-Joy as Charlotte, a composite character composed of Obama's different college girlfriends.

With hyper-naturalistic dialogue that doesn't sound remotely rehearsed and a nuanced look at what it means to be a black man in the 1980s, Barry gives the outgoing President a strong send-off ahead of Donald Trump's inauguration, even if the film works equally well outside of almost any distinct political context.
