7. My Friend Dahmer
There could have been some concerns that the adaptation of John "Derf" Backderf's graphic novel My Friend Dahmer was going to make excuses for the inexcusable monstrosities of Jeffrey Dahmer, but thankfully that wasn't the case.
Surprisingly starring Disney star Ross Lynch (who will be followed by fellow Mouseketeer Zac Efron in playing a serial killer soon), the adaptation was based on a Black List script and very cleverly balances perverse empathy for the character and deeply disturbing material.
It sits alongside The Virgin Suicides in its portrayal of dangerous, desperate teenage years and never even flirts with full-scale exploitation. It's painfully honest and clear and it makes for difficult watching, but it's definitely a conversation worth being part of.
