5. Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2
After the first movie was both incredibly charming and hugely surprising (the announcement was met with shock and more than a little apathy in the mainstream), the sequel to Guardians Of The Galaxy couldn't come soon enough. And while there's not quite the same sort of freshness this time out, the sequel more than delivers on its promise for the most part.
The decision to focus on Peter Quill's paternity story and the conflict between Gamora and Nebula was very smart as it added the same sort of personal tension as was at the heart of Civil War, and the new additions to the cast were all very good.
Inevitably, there's lots of humour, lots of musical coolness and great character performances, but it's the heart of the film that really shines. The gut punch ending of Yondu's death was right up there with some of the most affecting film-making of the entire year, and it's a truly great thing that James Gunn is back for the trilogy ender.
