Every 2018 Comic Book Movie Ranked Worst To Best
2. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse puts the comic book in Comic Book Movies. With an animation style that merges the hand-drawn art of the pages with computer animation, this isn't just a film; it's a comic book brought to life.
With that comes a couple of minor issues, including the fact it hits all of the typical origin story beats and the pacing skips over one key moment a little too quickly, but it's hard to care too much when everything else here is so fresh, vibrant, heartfelt, and fun.
This is the story of Miles Morales - and Peter Parker, Spider-Man Noir, Gwen Stacey, Peni Parker, Peter Porker - that fans have been waiting a long time to see on the big screen, but it's also a story of how anyone can be a hero. It harks back to the very ethos of the Spider-Man character that Steve Ditko and Stan Lee instilled in him back in 1962. It's a love letter to the character and the art form itself, but without simply being a reference-fest.
Everything here is a work of pure passion that also serves to push the genre forward; it's rich in themes, thrilling in its plot, and somehow manages to balance all of its multi-verse characters without losing sight of Miles' journey. We may have seen a lot of cinematic Spideys this century, but there's been nothing quite like this.
