Every 2018 Oscar Nominee Ranked From Worst To Best

34. Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour Gary Oldman
Focus Features

Nominations: 6 - Best Picture, Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design.

There's no doubting that Gary Oldman gives a spectacular, career-defining performance as Winston Churchill, though it's a damn shame the film surrounding him is honestly just OK.

Sedate, quiet and at times straight-up boring, Darkest Hour is a gentle, patience-testing historical drama that probably doesn't deserve to be battling for Best Picture, but clearly, Oldman's magnificent work pushed it over the top.

It is, for sure, an all-timer piece of work where performances based on real people are concerned, though outside of this the film is far too conventional and stodgy to be especially praise-worthy.
