Every 2018 Oscar Nominee Ranked From Worst To Best
33. The Square
Nominations: 1 - Best Foreign Language Film
There's absolutely no question that Sweden's entry for Best Foreign Language Film has its potential greatness stunted by its brutal 151-minute runtime and agonisingly slow pace, but as a statement on the nature of contemporary art, it is bracingly, hilariously effective.
Despite winning the Palme d'Or at last year's Cannes Film Festival, it's mostly considered an outside possibility for the Oscar, likely due to its sometimes esoteric and willfully punishing content. The performances, though, are terrific, most memorably Elizabeth Moss as journalist Anne.
Pretty much the definition of a film that's "not for everyone", but enjoyable all the same.
