Though it would've been incredibly easy for Wonder to be an overly sappy, saccharine weepie-of-the-week, credit to all involved for producing an altogether more sober and heartfelt film that earns the tears it tries to wring from you.

Jacob Tremblay is as excellent as you'd expect as Auggie, a young boy living with a facial deformity, while Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson deliver some of their most charming work in years as his parents.

What's most surprising about the film is its emotional depth: it dares to examine the effect Auggie's condition has on his friends and family, and for the most part it pays off splendidly.

Some agreeably surreal touches - including a cameo from Chewbecca - cement that this isn't just another garden variety feel-good film.
