31. Loving Vincent

BreakThru Films

Nominations: 1 - Best Animated Feature Film

While it would've been easy for the Academy to ignore an animated offering such as this that didn't come from a major studio or have a sizable marketing budget, it also would've been criminal to snub such an ambitious and wonderfully executed film.

Loving Vincent is the first fully painted animated feature ever made, with every single frame painstakingly painted over the course of several years. While it's fair to say that the film's style is far more impressive than its content - it's a Vincent Van Gogh biopic, by the way - it's practically impossible not to be left in awe of the production's sheer audacity.

With a top-drawer cast including Saoirse Ronan, Chris O'Dowd and Jerome Flynn, Loving Vincent takes animation to exciting and daring new places, even if it hasn't got a hope in hell of actually winning the award.
