Though it doesn't quite boast the thematic and aesthetic brilliance of Pixar's very best works, Coco is another strong showing from the animation studio, riffing on mortality and family in a way that's appropriate for kids and adults alike.

The visuals are terrific and the Oscar-nominated song is a misty-eyed earworm, so for while Coco falls ever-so-slightly short of its full potential, it is a charming, often hilarious and incredibly poignant offering with some surprising divergences into narrative darkness.

It's got its Best Animated Feature Film Oscar already sewn up, that's for sure.
