Nominations: 1 - Best Documentary Feature

Though there have been numerous high-profile documentaries released about the Syrian Civil War over the last few years, Last Men in Aleppo - which won the World Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance - stands out by training its focus on the civilian volunteers known as the White Helmets, who attempt to save lives in the midst of military strikes.

With its often brutal frontline footage, the film certainly isn't for everyone, but triumphs as a vital, harrowing and emotionally devastating examination of almost impossible courage under the most abject circumstances.

As noble a use of the documentary medium as there has ever been, this searing feat of filmmaking shouldn't be approached lightly, but also shouldn't be ignored.
