16. Loveless

Nominations: 1 - Best Foreign Language Film

The latest film from director Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return, Leviathan) is another towering, intimate epic that powerfully indicts a broken contemporary Russia as it depicts the disappearance of a young boy amid the turmoil of his parents' impending divorce.

Slow, deliberate and utterly intoxicating, Loveless is magnificently performed, visually stunning and offers up a haunting vision of a state in crisis, providing few easy answers and, true to the director's sensibilities, concluding in suitably beguiling fashion.

Whether it'll be too cold and disconnected to score with Academy voters remains to be seen, but in the current political climate, its Oscar victory would be one hell of a statement.
