Nominations: 13 - Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress (Sally Hawkins), Best Supporting Actor (Richard Jenkins), Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing

The year's most-nominated movie is also a pretty unconventional choice for the Academy Awards, but the enticing allure of this stunning fantasy romance was apparently too much to ignore.

Guillermo del Toro delivers one of his strongest efforts to date with this visually lavish, thoroughly charming and superbly acted adventure, which melds numerous disparate genres into an impressively coherent whole.

It's looking increasingly likely that del Toro will win his much-deserved Best Director Oscar for the film, and while it'll probably narrowly miss out on Best Picture, it's nevertheless a huge achievement for a movie that could so easily have been completely snubbed by the Academy.
