Every 2019 Comic Book Movie Ranked Worst To Best
14. Dark Phoenix
Making Dark Phoenix must have been a strange experience for all involved with the impending Disney merger hanging over the project. This surely would have made Simon Kinberg's job a lot harder than it needed to be, but even so, as a finale to the 19 year long franchise and as a movie on its own merit, Dark Phoenix disappointed.
After the underwhelming Apocalypse, this was an opportunity to take fans back to the heights of First Class and Days of Future Past. Instead, however, Fox tackled the same story as X-Men: Last Stand did 13 years before it, focusing on a barely developed Jean Grey instead of a real goodbye to the likes of Professor X, Magneto, and Beast.
Next to the strong as ever McAvoy and Fassbender, there are no shortages of poor performances in this movie. Jennifer Lawrence continued to prove she wanted nothing to do with the franchise, Sophie Turner unfortunately just wasn't strong enough to carry the film as needed, as Jessica Chastain's Vuk was devoid of any personality or character whatsoever.
Even if the franchise wasn't about to be turned over to Disney, Dark Phoenix's poor reception and awful box office numbers would likely have seen an end to the X-Men story anyway.
