DC movies are enjoying something of a resurgence at the moment, with Aquaman, Shazam and Joker raking in audience and critical acclaim, as well as performing strongly at the box-office: Aquaman hit a billion dollars, while Joker is about to pass the $800 million mark.

Audiences can now trust in the DC brand, and this goodwill has already yielded some solid financial returns, leaving it up to next year's Wonder Woman 1984 to carry the torch. And even at this early stage, the movie looks teed up for success.

Everyone loved the first film, and it managed to haul in an $800 million gross despite Wonder Woman being largely untested in the blockbuster film space. Plus, it even managed to overcome the vitriol being directed towards DC at the time (thanks to BvS and Suicide Squad), and even some negative press of its own (prior to release, the movie was called a "mess"), so if the first film succeeded with everything going against it, shouldn't the second be an even bigger hit with everything going for it?

It's also important to note that, over the last ten years, the first sequels to solo superhero movies have consistently out-grossed their predecessors: Iron Man 2 beat Iron Man, Winter Soldier beat The First Avenger, Far From Home beat Homecoming, and Days of Future Past beat First Class. If 1984 is as good as the first - and follows this trend - then a billion dollars will be within reach.
