Every Adam Sandler Movie Ranked Worst To Best

5. Funny People (2009)

The Waterboy Adam Sandler
Universal

On paper, Sandler isn't straining himself in Judd Apatow's overlong, ambitious, and deeply affecting dramedy Funny People, since he's playing a popular comedian-turned-actor, but there's much more to his performance (and the film at large) than meets the eye.

Leaning into his screen persona as a man facing a recent cancer diagnosis, Sandler is more self-aware and comfortable than usual, using his time -- as well as Apatow's love for improvisation -- to balance the humour and the heart of Funny People with remarkable ease.

The Sandman has always been amusing and unabashedly himself, but rarely to this degree. This one will surprise you at every turn.

I get to write about what I love, so that's pretty cool. Every great film should seem new every time you see it. Be excellent to each other.
