Every Avenger's Best Performance OUTSIDE The MCU
17. Paul Bettany - A Beautiful Mind
Paul Bettany's rise in the MCU might be one of the greatest behind-the-scenes stories. For what felt like an age, he was exclusively the voice of Tony Stark's AI servant JARVIS, until Age Of Ultron came out and he emerged from a sarcophagus as the all-powerful Vision. Little did we know though, that Bettany knew of this plan for some time, and the idea of turning him into the purple hero had been in the pipeline for a while.
Whatever happens with the Vision character in Wandavision is open to speculation, but I hope he has a better send-off than in Infinity War. For good reason too - Bettany is an incredible actor, who exudes a playful charisma that needs a nuanced performer beside him for contrast.
This isn't more obvious than in the multi-award winning film A Beautiful Mind, where Bettany plays John Nash's kind-hearted roommate, Charles Herman. Next to Russell Crowe's performance, the role of Charles is a direct opposite. As one becomes more unhinged, the other becomes more reserved and the chemistry between Crowe and Bettany is profoundly touching.
While Crowe might have portrayed the more magnetic performance, it can only be as strong as the supporting cast around him, and Bettany was high on the list of contributors.
