Batman Returns sounded it could surpass the original in every way. It had Danny DeVito, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, and Batman fighting rocket-equipped penguins. What's not to love?

But Bats' second outing was criticised for its incredibly unsettling tone. The last film's climax was uplifting. Batman Returns, on the other hand, has a finale which is dark and bittersweet.

Watching Oswald Cobblepot choke to death before being figuratively buried at sea by a colony of penguins is nothing short of tragic. The way Catwoman electrocutes Max Schreck until he's a blackened corpse sounds more suited in a slasher than a popcorn flick. Although Selina Kyle is shown to be alive in the last shot, you can't help feeling depressed after watching so much misery in Batman Returns' last act.

If you thought Catwoman's appearance at the end felt a bit tacked on, that's because... it was. The studio pushed for a spin-off revolving around the feline femme fatale and so, had this shot of Selina added in weeks before Batman Returns was released. But since this project never materialised, this shot comes across as cheap sequel-bait.
