If not Kevin Smith's best film then certainly his most inspired and hilarious, Dogma is a legendary religious satire which takes the hypocrisy of organised faith to task with barbed insight.

What really makes Dogma sing in spite of its overlong 128-minute runtime is the note-perfect casting across the board, with Affleck, Matt Damon, George Carlin, Linda Fiorentino, Janeane Garofalo, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, and Alanis Morissette all playing their parts terrifically.

Affleck and Damon's dynamic is especially fun here as the villains of the piece - two fallen angels who plot to exploit a Catholic loophole and return to Heaven, which would in turn cause the end of the world.

There are so many outrageously funny one-liners packed into Smith's script, and despite all its mockery of Catholicism in particular, it's not anti-religion at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.
