3. Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote (2005)

Capote Philip Seymour Hoffman
United Artists

Who should have won: Philip Seymour Hoffman - Capote.

The late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman spent his entire career crafting characters who were broken, amusing, lovable, and tragic, which is why his turn as controversial author Truman Capote proved to be such a perfect fit for his talents.

Based on the author's writing of his seminal classic In Cold Blood, Capote finds Hoffman at his most unflinching raw and honest, brilliantly analysing the selfishness, addictions, trauma and secrets of a man who never felt entirely comfortable in his own skin, despite his obvious genius.

It's easy to see why the role is such a haunting one to return to, shadowing Hoffman's own too-short life, but it's easy to fall head over heels for it despite its real life parallels. Rarely has any actor spilled their guts with such compelling results.
