2. Anthony Hopkins - The Father (2020)

Capote Philip Seymour Hoffman
Sony Pictures Classics

Who should have won: Anthony Hopkins - The Father.

It was a big shock when Anthony Hopkins won his second Oscar over the late Chadwick Boseman and his great work in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, but - wonderful as it would've been to see Boseman win - the beloved veteran totally deserved it.

In The Father, Hopkins plays Anthony, an aging, dementia-suffering man who refuses to accept life's latest curveball or his daughter's attempts to help him. Hopkins captures the fear, uncertainty, and pain of Anthony's steady realisation that he's lost, making each reveal and cruel twist more poignant and wrenching than the last.

Hard as it may be to watch such a personal, harrowing exploration of dementia, Hopkins' ability to portray every aspect of the disease's complexities and frustrations is utterly entrancing. He's truly never been better.
