7. Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine (2013)

Blue Jasmine
Sony Pictures Classics

Who should have won: Cate Blanchett - Blue Jasmine.

Film critic Mick LaSalle, reviewing Woody Allen's dark comedy-drama Blue Jasmine, described Cate Blanchett's work in the title role as "beyond analysis," which is why it's so difficult to articulate everything great about the performance.

As a rich socialite whose life is derailed by a divorce, heavy financial burden, and a debilitating nervous breakdown that sends her running into the arms of her younger sister, Blanchett manages to be hysterically funny, invasive, manic and ultimately heart-rending all at once.

It's a truly colossal achievement, moving between melodrama and satire without fault, and constantly shocking with its twists and confidence. Blanchett is flawless in the role, and impossible to forget as she slips further into mental deterioration.
