Every Best Picture Oscar Movie Winner Of 21st Century Ranked Worst To Best
10. The Shape of Water (2017)
What should have won: Get Out.
The great Guillermo del Toro should have already had at least one Best Picture win under his belt before he finally took the prize - for Pan's Labyrinth, which remains his finest achievement - but The Shape of Water remains a lovely winner all the same.
Though it occasionally succumbs to its own self-indulgence, del Toro's fantastical love story about a mute woman (a brilliant Sally Hawkins) and the mysterious sea creature (Doug Jones) she falls in love with is so joyously made, clearly crafted by a great teller of stories and lover of movie magic, that it's easy to fall under its majestic spell.
Gorgeously shot, sometimes scary, and often life-affirming, The Shape of Water is the product of a filmmaker long fascinated with human connection, but never comfortable exploring it in a straightforward way. He wants to leave his audience in awe, and he certainly does here, with an 'odd couple' romance for the ages.
Whether you buy into its magical realism or not, the confidence with which del Toro crafts his tale is enough to leave you stunned.
