82. A Man For All Seasons (1966)

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Columbia Pictures

Not unlike The Life of Emile Zola, A Man for All Seasons takes a rich historical landmark - the moment King Henry VIII turned on the Catholic Church - and leaves its cinematic promise tragically unrealised.

Far too serious for its own good, Fred Zinnemann’s drama lacks memorability and the confidence needed to push itself, despite resounding work from stars Robert Shaw and Paul Scofield. It’s the kind of film that’s just sorta there, and watchable, then gone with a whimper and easily forgotten. Meh.
