Every Best Picture Oscar Winner Ranked Worst To Best

83. Going My Way (1944)

One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest
Paramount

With its sentimental themes of religion and human connectivity, Going My Way is a sappy drama that isn’t the movie that should’ve won Best Picture (that would be Wilder’s Double Indemnity), but thanks to its easy charm and Bing Crosby’s screen presence, it’s not quite a dud.

The story here is touching enough to get by, but the most interesting thing about Going My Way is surely the fact that Barry Fitzgerald’s warm performance was nominated for Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor, leading to a major Academy rule change.
