59. Rain Man (1988)
An early indication of how great an actor Tom Cruise could be with the right material, Rain Man is today widely recognised for Dustin Hoffman's wrenching turn as Cruise's initially unwanted autistic brother, who of course allows his crusty sibling to find true purpose in life.
Rain Man is uplifting and kind of sweet, anchored by two actors at the height of their powers and a script that competently blends great character work with meaningful drama. Still, some of its humour doesn't land today, and it never should have beaten Alan Parker's masterful thriller Mississippi Burning.
