88. Driving Mis Daisy (1988)
By today’s standards, Driving Miss Daisy is about as underwhelming as a film about race and unlikely friendship can get, and it’s hard to imagine it felt much better in the 80s.
Simplistic and uneventful, there’s something worth watching here thanks to Jessica Tandy, but the film’s heavy-handed themes and joyless story are so mishandled that even Morgan Freeman can’t break through in a memorable way. The fact that Do the Right Thing wasn’t even nominated this year makes its win feel even more dated.
