23. From Here To Eternity (1951)
Melodramatic in the way most 50s romantic dramas tended to be, Fred Zinnemann's stunning From Here to Eternity casts a fine ensemble and weaves together a series of compelling tales about love and war.
Starring Burt Lancaster, Deborah Kerr, Ernest Borgnine, Montgomery Cliff, and Donna Reed, the film follows a group of soldiers whose lives take an unexpected turn on the eve of America joining WWII.
It may be best remembered for the iconic beach kiss between Lancaster and Kerr, but the joy of watching From Here to Eternity comes from how compelling everything around that scene is. This is beautiful, bittersweet romance at its finest, as well as a quiet depiction of innocence lost that Zinnemann crafts with delicate care.
