Every Bond Movie Theme Song Ranked Worst To Best
21. The Writings On The Wall (Spectre) By Sam Smith
It was always going to be a tough gig for anyone to follow the mighty Adele and her smash hit for Skyfall, but one would have thought they'd put up a better effort than this. Sam Smith has sung some great tunes, but finds himself out of his depth here, mistaking singing each high note in a higher octave for singing with soul and passion. Movie Reviewer Leigh Paatsch aptly described the song as sounding like Smith was "singing about a sick dog".
The opening title sequence also does the song no favours, a weird concoction of a bare chested Daniel Craig and scantily clad women resembling squid. The sequence however would have been far easier to sit through if not for the painfully dull song offered here. Adele was initially rumoured to be returning to sing this song, and she may have been the only person in the world capable of pulling this one off. Instead we get this limp effort that like the previous entry on this list, managed to kill all momentum built up in the pre credit sequence, in this case Spectre's brilliantly stylised opening sequence set at the 'Day of the Dead' celebrations.
Incredibly, the song was not only nominated for an Oscar for best song, but actually won it! Although when your main competition is the title track for a Fifty Shades movie, it's not as great an achievement as it looks on paper.
