Every Bond Movie Theme Song Ranked Worst To Best
17. From Russia With Love By Matt Munro
Matt Munro's droning title song for the second James film was the first official 'title song' for the first 007 film, so therefore counts as the first flop. The tune itself is actually not all that bad and thankfully features as an instrumental without Munro's lyrics in the opening title sequence. It is only when Munro's moaning is inserted that the song begins to suffer, with the song painfully playing over the final moments of the film.
In fairness to the famous production combo of Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman, the formula for the greatest franchise of all time had still not been perfected. It wasn't until the next film in the series that the title song would play in its entirety over the opening credits and that one was a cracker!
In hindsight the song would have been much better served being sung by a female artist with the ability to hit the high notes with gusto as the song required. The fact that Shirley Bassey was signed on to sing the simply perfect Goldfinger, makes one think that this was something the producers thought too. Until Bassey's efforts, the Bond franchise was stuck with a song you'd expect to hear in a dodgy bar in Vegas and has not aged well at all.
