Every Bong Joon-Ho Film Ranked Worst To Best

5. Memories Of Murder

The Host
CJ Entertainment

In only Bong’s second film as a writer and director, he established himself as a talent for the future with this crime drama, that is still hailed today as one of the best South Korean films of all time.

Memories of Murder is based on the true story of Korea’s first serial murders in history, which took place between 1986 and 1991 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province.

What makes the cases so much harder to solve is the lack of experience by local officials in dealing with such a case, as well as the improper collection of evidence and investigation methods by its detectives. The film follows the efforts of the main detectives of the case as they not only struggle to gather evidence, but also clash over the right methods necessary in order to catch the killer. But overtime, the detectives are able to work together and begin establishing patterns of behaviour as they get closer to finding the culprit.

The film was praised for its main characters performances and even got praise from Quinton Tarantino, who named it one of his favourite movies since 1992.
