One in a long line of films casting Murphy as a Tortured Soldier, Cold Mountain features the actor only briefly, but he makes a grim impression as a soldier who assaults a wounded Natalie Portman and seems poised to murder her newborn baby.

Rarely the villain, Murphy's turn here is nasty, snivelling and bleakly hopeless, and whilst he's only around for a moment - lost amongst an impossibly packed cast - he still manages to capture a world of feeling with minimal screentime.
