Every Darren Aronofsky Film Ranked Worst To Best

5. Mother!

Black Swan
Paramount

Mother! is a fascinating film, filled with some excellent performances, exceptional sound design and pacing that has you frequently on edge. The last note there is one of the best aspects of the title, for the always slow build finds itself attacked by sudden moments of intensity and you become so stressed that you beg for the silence to return.

Although it is underappreciated as a film, specific faults do make its lacklustre reception understandable. Some of its most significant issues again relate to ambition, as the dense subject matter and heavy symbolism are impressive but can detract from the experience. Although it is handled well, the content is so large that at times it becomes too heavy-handed and clumsy.

The story is a compelling mystery, but once you have figured out what the allegorical narrative is trying to tell you, it becomes rather dull, as you can easily predict what is coming next.

However, the film deserves more credit than it receives, as the acting is phenomenal, the setting sublime, and the masterful connection of sound and action is genuinely fascinating.
