Every Darren Aronofsky Film Ranked Worst To Best
4. Pi
Pi is such a fantastic experience that you will struggle to replicate in any other title. The story of a paranoid mathematician who attempts to search for the numerical answer to universal patterns in life delivers a concept of intellect vs nature, a theme that often appears in the director's work.
It shows how the act of searching for meaning using logic and fact can result in miscommunication and a fundamental fear of understanding. The idea of knowing the answers to the universe and life ultimately becomes a frightening concept, as the film's conclusion teaches you that sometimes ignorance is bliss.
Our protagonist Max seems to find knowledge to be a curse that injects him with paranoia and mental health issues, but in the ending, he takes action against this and ultimately discovers peace in not knowing the answers.
This was Aronofsky's first film, and it's clear that he pours all of his creative energy into the project. The movie is incredibly low-budget but that really adds to the grungy and visceral storytelling style Aronofsky would go on to be known for.
