Every DCEU Movie Ranked From Worst To Best (So Far)
3. Aquaman
Aquaman is currently the second-best reviewed DCEU movie by a pretty firm margin, but the majority of the positive reviews are three-star write-ups for a reason.
Aquaman is a film that does a lot of things with a basic level of competence, but almost nothing with any level of inspiration or much imagination.
James Wan's action direction is dynamic to a point and the performances are generally solid, but the laughably unambitious script is pure, lazy superhero formula.
With heaps of expository dialogue which waste the talents of the wonderful Willem Dafoe, a predictable, down-the-line story you've seen dozens of times before and a tone that too often veers into cornball territory, Aquaman is rough and underwhelming, but at least keeps itself lightly simple and is moderately effective to that end.
This isn't the inspired home-run a lot of people were hoping for, but it's at least a firm-ish foundation for future movies to hopefully, ahem, push the boat out a little more (sorry).
