4. Pierce Brosnan

By the time Pierce Brosnan landed the role of James Bond, the character had been through so many changes, secured so much praise and suffered so many disappointments that it was difficult to predict how Brosnan would be able to keep the legacy of 007 alive whilst putting his own spin on the character.

Appearing in four movies between 1995 and 2002 - the last of which, Die Another Day, caused the entire franchise to reboot itself with Daniel Craig - Brosnan quickly showed he would have no problem bringing the spy to life in his own way.

Not only is his debut, GoldenEye, one of the finest films in the series, but Brosnan's performance is also one of the best Bond has ever seen. Blending together the cool charm of Connery, the action-heavy allure of Dalton and a touch of Moore's humour, Brosnan was a near-perfect mix of everything that made his predecessor's great.

Unfortunately, Brosnan's take on 007 didn't last for all four films, with Die Another Day suffering massively under its weak script and Brosnan's noticeably uninclined performance. Up until then, though, the actor had been pretty damn great.
