1. Iron Man (2008)

To put it simply, without Iron Man there simply wouldn€™t be a Marvel Cinematic Universe, and without Robert Downey Jr, there arguably wouldn€™t be a successful Iron Man franchise. In that respect, bringing in the charismatic, troubled actor and convincing Marvel to forego their concerns about him might be Favreau€™s greatest single achievement.

In the great vein of Favreau€™s leading characters, Downey Jr€™s Stark is a broken toy, but utterly charming and the director€™s decision to focus more on building the brand of the character rather than a distracting spectacular story was inspired.

The film might not be one of the best in the franchise, but it introduced the best performance and propelled a supposedly B-level superhero towards becoming a legitimate billion dollar concern. It was a star-making job for the director and the perfect resurrection for Downey Jr, packed with the character building and charm that has so far defined Favreau€™s career.
