2. Jurassic World (2015)
Intended as a relaunch of the franchise, Jurassic World takes the basic premise of Jurassic Park and makes it bigger, infusing its thrills with a modern edge that makes it feel at once timely and freshly exciting.
Set over two decades after the original film, it takes place in a magnificent theme park that's inhabited by dinosaurs, and seems almost too good to be true. Which, of course, it is, as things start to spiral out of control when the dinosaurs escape their enclosures and destroy everything in their path.
Yes, it's basically a re-tread of the original film, but the increased scope and stunning use of CGI make Jurassic World much more than a cheap rehash of past successes. Thanks to newcomer Chris Pratt and his tamed raptors, it's totally in-keeping with the themes of the franchise, and still walks away feeling like its own film.
Before its confused sequels came along and bungled the potential it set in motion, Jurassic World seemed poised to be the start of something truly great. But even though future instalments failed to improve on it, it's still in its own right an exciting and worthy successor to the film that started it all...
